A Hunter Pace trial tests the skills and obedience of field hunters and their riders. In this oil painting, a field hunter pair gallops toward the finish, enjoying a beautiful Fall day with their fellow fox hunters.
This painting was created from photographs used with permission of Metamora Photo. The background was created from bits and pieces of several photographs and my imagination. The horse was painted in a time-consuming layering technique used by many of the Old Masters.
I have long been fascinated by the pageantry and traditions of Fox Hunting although I know it has a rather violent reputation. It was a favorite subject of one of my favorite sporting art painters, Sir Alfred Munnings whose paintings of the English gentry fox hunting are beyond compare.
