I met these two beauties at a draft horse pull at the county fair and knew instantly that they would make a great painting.
The painting itself was quite a challenge and required several changes in design from the reference photograph. I wanted to paint a team of Belgians, but the horse on the left was actually a bay. The trailer was very rusty and had no reflections, the horse on the right had a wide blaze that made his muzzle look fat. For that reason I did a color study before tackling the final painting in order to work out all the changes and any problems. Going through these preliminary steps and painting in layers of oils took a long time, but the results were worth it.
What I love about the painting is that when the room is somewhat dark in the evening, the Belgian on the right seems to come right out of the painting to look at you. This would be a perfect painting for a somewhat dark wall but also looks great in bright light.
This painting is framed in a beautiful burl wood custom frame.
