Some years ago I was commissioned to paint this Friesian mare as a gift for the owner. When I did the photo shoot, with the owner, I took a lot of photos to get the feeling of the mare's shapes and personality and movement. Although the portrait was a large oil, this image stuck in my mind for years for the pensive mood it portrayed.
When I finally got around to doing this pencil drawing, it was a labor of love to catch that look in a moment of rest after she had paraded up and down the lane numerous times while I tried to catch her in the best moments of Friesian movement.
You can see Alpi's portrait, "Forever Friesian" here in the Horses gallery. https://www.karenthumm.com/portfolio-viewer?collection=66969#lg=1&artworkId=1422757
